How to Coordinate Outfits for Family Photos

I know having your family photos taken is a far off dream to some of you. It can be a real struggle to get everyone’s schedule to line up. On top of all of that, you have to figure out what everyone is going to wear. One thing I hear the most from my families a few weeks before their sessions is “now, I just have to figure out our outfits!” I get it! It is hard to coordinate outfits for your entire family. What will everyone wear? What colors will you use? Do you have to purchase new clothes? Does everyone need to be matchy-matchy? How do you make the outfits just “go” together?

Today, I’m sharing 3 tips that will make outfit planning so much easier! You will no longer stress about what to do or how to get started! Let’s dig in!

  1. Figure out the style of the session

Now, before you say “I don’t know what our style is?!?!?!?!” Take a deep breath and relax, you have likely already planned the style of your shoot without even knowing it! One way to figure out the style of the shoot is to take a look at the location your session will be at. If your session is around a campfire, you will likely not be wearing formal clothing. Another way to figure out the style of the session is to ask yourself “what type of pictures do I want to get from this session?” If you are wanting casual, fun, or laid-back pictures then you can base your outfits around those ideas. If you are wanting your pictures to feel formal, extravagant, or expensive then perhaps you should think about choosing items that would better display those qualities.

For this example, the family is wanting a fun, summery, and candid session. They want to get images that capture their family in their normal day-to-day life.

  2. Figure out what colors you like

Once you’ve figure out what style of session/clothing you’re wanting, it’s time to figure out the color scheme! If you’re struggling to figure out what color or colors to consider, I have a tip for you! Think about where these prints will be hanging. Will you be displaying them in your living or dining room? Pick outfit colors that correspond with the decorations or prints you already have. This should help narrow down your selection, and it will allow your images look at home in your space!

For this example, the family is using the colors coral, white, navy, and yellow. They will base their outfits off this selection.

  3. Get creative!

Lastly, it’s time to have fun!! You’ve done your research, and you know what color and style you’re wanting. Now, you get to figure out how it looks on your family. I normally suggest that 25% of your family wear a pattern. This adds great extra detail. Next, I suggest that your family mix and matches the colors in their separates {shirts & pants}. If you have girls in your family, consider having one of the ladies wear a dress. I also think it’s a great idea to have one family member wear a piece that combines several colors. This breaks it up from separates and adds some differentiation.

For this example, the Erter family has yellow as their main color. You can see that as majority of the family is wearing a yellow piece. Their son is in a plaid shirt that combines all of the colors, and their youngest daughter is in a yellow dress. Both of these pieces mix up from the rest of the separate pieces. There are also some small patterns in the dad’s blue shirt, as well as the daughter’s yellow shirt. These patterns create extra detail.
