If you’re following me on Instagram, or you read my April blog post, then you know I have been traveling quite a lot this past month. I am by no means an expert traveler, but I’ve definitely had my fair share of learning moments this past month. So – I’m sharing a few tips..errr lessons I’ve learned!

1. Travel at Low Travel Times
You probably read the title to this point and thought “duh,” but I want to elaborate. Driving a rental car is no easy task, especially in a new city. You don’t quite understand all of the controls or where the blind spots are, and on top of that, you don’t know what lanes you need to be in or where traffic jams typically occur. It has been a huge help to arrive at the airport at time when the car traffic is low. I typically try to be on the roads in the daylight, and between 10 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. This, typically, helps me avoid rush hour, and I don’t have to stress out about the drive, as much.

2. Charge Whenever You Get a Chance
My past trip to San Antonio taught me that it is important to charge your devices whenever possible. I assumed that I would be able to find a charge at almost any place… like isn’t this the 21st century? But friends, the airport gets crazy and everyone else thinks the exact same thing. While some airports have added additional plug-in locations, you will still be limited. Due to rain, my flight to Dallas was delayed, and this meant I would miss my connection from Dallas to San Antonio. I was on the phone for 45 minutes trying to figure out other options and stay up-to-date with the weather. I can’t imagine what I wouldn’t done if my phone would have died. Also – if you’re planning to rent a car – be sure to pack a car charger so your phone won’t die while you use the maps app.

3. Plan Ample Time
I know that it seems like life is sooo busy, and we always have to be in the GO GO GO mentality {read more on my thoughts about being busy}. You likely don’t want to plan loads of time between flights or even think about flights getting delayed. I get it – you have a lot going on! However, unpredictable things happen. For instance, I didn’t expect the weather in Dallas to delay my arrival in San Antonio by five hours, but it happened. I’m so glad I planned to fly in the day before, rather than the morning of the photoshoot. I can’t imagine the horror of explaining to a client, that we would have to reschedule. Be sure to plan in cushion time. Yes, a 30-minute layover is quick, but it’s risk to take at most large airports. Don’t add extra stress if you don’t have to!

I’m excited to share more travel lessons with all of you! Are you traveling on your own for the first time and scared? No worries – send me your questions, and I’d be happy to reassure you!
