How to Give Your Senior Session a POP! || Midwest Senior Photographer

St. Louis Senior Session

Y’all, as you know, senior pictures are one of my FAVORITE things to photograph. So much joy, energy, and FUN! I just love them! I often find my seniors love the little tips and tricks I share throughout their planning process, and I figured it would be easiest to compile them all together in one location…so here we are! I’m sharing a few tips to add an extra pop to your senior photos. These tricks are easy add-ons that will take your photos from great to fabulous {sounds dramatic, but I promise they work!} Let’s get started!

  1. Wear a little extra makeup!

I always suggest wearing a little extra makeup any time you get your photos taken, as the camera can often wash out its subject. However, I think this is especially important during your senior session, because the focus is entirely on you! We will take photos from afar and close-up! You will want to make sure you can see all of your features in the camera. You don’t have to go overboard on your makeup, but try to be a little bolder and more dramatic. Make sure you still feel comfortable in how you look. I will note that many people say it feels “funny” how much makeup they have on, but I promise it won’t look as “over-the-top” in your photos. One last thing – don’t forget lipstick!

  2. Get your hair styled!

An easy fix for the first two points is selecting my senior session that includes hair and makeup. However, if that’s not in your budget, I suggest still styling your hair. For senior pictures, I think it is best to do a natural style, versus an updo. Natural style meaning: curls, straightened hair, half up/half down, loose beach waves.  I would suggest to add a little more volume than normal. Just like the camera can “wash out” your face, it’s easy for your hair to look flat in images. So, add a little poof, use a teasing comb, and style away! You don’t have to go crazy, but adding a little extra “umph!” will make a huge difference.

  3. Wear clothing with TEXTURE!

This is one of my favorite tips, because I really do think it makes a world of difference. If possible, select clothing that has different textures {& patterns too}. Adding different textures will make you look so much more polished, professional, and put together. I absolutely love it when girls wear faux fur vests, a chunky necklace, a cozy sweater, a knitted top, etc. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but y’all, I’m telling you it adds an extra pop!

  4. Paint your nails!

I HIGHLY suggest painting your nails whether or not you typically do. I know that this just isn’t what some people do, but y’all, I’m telling you it makes you look so much more put together. This is just a small way to add an extra pop to your photos, and I promise you won’t regret it. You don’t need to pay big bucks for a manicure. Simply, buy fingernail polish that will go well with all of your outfits and paint your nails beforehand. I would suggest adding a top coat if you paint them yourself, so they don’t chip while we’re at our session!

  5. Wear something BOLD!

So, I know this one’s a little out there, but stay with me! When shopping, I always find the cutest outfits that I love, but then, I’m immediately stopped when I think “where in the world would I wear this?!” You know what I mean? It’s a little to *extra* to wear to school or work, and it’s not like you go to a concert every weekend. That’s the type of outfit I’m talking about. One that you love, you still feel comfortable in, but it’s a little *extra*. It’s a little bolder than your typical day-to-day uniform. It still screams YOU, but it’s extra fun! I think these are my favorite outfits during senior sessions. Here are a few examples that I’ve loved: fringe, fur vests, over-the-knee boots, corduroy skirts, lots of layers, red lipstick, high heels, long flowy dresses, a fedora/sun hat, trench coat, hair accessories, etc. The options are limitless, but hopefully, this will get you started!

That’s it for now, I have so much more to share… but that will have to be for another blog post! Have any specific questions for senior photos? Leave them in the comment section or send them to me via the contact form!
